Voluntary oil spill containment training
Actor: City of Turku ● Year: 2011 ● Address: Puutarhakatu 1, Turku, Finland
The first voluntary oil spill containment training was organised for the staff of the City of Turku in 2010-2011.
Description
The training was organised together with the Southwest Finland Rescue Department (Varsinais-Suomen aluepelastulaitos) and WWF Finland. The training included teaching of theory and practical exercises.
Benefits
The Archipelago Sea with its numerous islands is an extremely challenging area from the oil spill containment’s point of view. The work must be quick and co-ordinated. In case of oil catastrophe the volunteer force is needed to help the authorities. By organising trainings, the number of volunteers is increased.
During the course the participants receive training on how to avoid consequences of oil spill, how to minimize them and what kind of effects the oil has on the environment. The individuals who have received the training can lead a group of about ten volunteers in oil spill containment operations.
Background information
The arranging of the training is a voluntary action in which the trainees are also volunteers.
